Wenceslas Square

Wenceslas Square

The bustling centre of the city.

Wenceslas Square in the heart of Prague is a popular destination for many tourists who book Prague holiday rentals. This lively district is full of shops, hotels, bars, restaurants, and clubs that cater to all types of visitors.

Wenceslas Square is one of the two main squares in Prague’s city centre (the other is Old Town Square, just a short walk away). Construction began centuries ago, during the reign of King Charles IV and was originally the site of the city’s horse market. The 60 metre wide and 750 metre long boulevard with the ability to hold as many as 400,000 people has served a variety of functions over the years, hosting everything from military parades to anti-communist protests and national celebrations.

The dominant figure in the square and one that visitors staying in Prague holiday rentals are sure to notice, is the imposing statue of the square’s namesake St. Wenceslas astride his horse. Better known as Good King Wenceslas of Christmas carol fame, he is a Czech national hero. Located directly behind the statue of St. Wenceslas is the impressive Czech National Museum which features a host of historically significant heirlooms as well as artistic masterpieces. Just to the left of the statue is the breathtaking Prague State Opera, which still puts on live performances regularly. Another notable monument in Wenceslas Square is the pair of plaques dedicated to the memory of all the Czech citizens killed during the country’s Communist rule. One of the markers is dedicated to Jan Palach, a Czech national who famously set himself on fire to protest the Soviet invasion of the former Czechoslovakia.

Once visitors staying in Prague holiday rentals have taken in all the historic sights and sounds of Wenceslas Square, they can move on to more modern pursuits. The square is the origin of Prague’s main shopping district and features all sorts of international shops and boutiques. There is also ample nightlife, entertainment, fine dining, and accommodation including private Prague holiday rentals.

Wenceslas Square is centrally located to all of Prague’s major tourist destinations and attractions. Prague’s busiest metro stations have entrances on the boulevard to provide quick and easy access to all other areas of the city centre and beyond; metro lines A, B, and C all make stops and depart from Wenceslas Square so visitors never have to wait long for a train.
